As the year draws to a close and we prepare for the New Year, I would like to thank each one of you for your contribution to the IET and its goals and wish all of you and your families a very successful New Year.

Your Institution has continued to grow significantly in 2014. Our membership has grown to approximately 163,000 of which close to 12,000 members are from India itself. This makes India the biggest region for the IET outside of the UK.

2014 has been a year of many firsts for the Institution. Sudeshna Saha from Kolkata won the global PATW challenge representing South Asia region. She is the first global winner of PATW from India. Congratulations Sudeshna, you make us proud and I hope this is just a beginning of a long list of future winners from the region.

This year also saw the launch of a new journal, “Healthcare Letters” which takes our number journal publications to 28. We also saw the introduction of “Knowledge packs” as an annual member benefit. Under this benefit, all our members can download up to 5 articles a year from pool of over 190,000 journal articles/book chapters/conference proceedings.

In India we brought out our first ever IET solar whitepaper - customised and written for the Indian scenario. Our Prestige Lectures and Scholarship Awards continued to connect the current and the next generation of engineers to cutting edge engineering research and work happening around the world. 2015 will be a very important year for

the IET in India as we start our journey towards a new direction. In our previous edition of Member Matters, we had articulated the new strategy for India for 2015-2017 that has been approved by the Board of Trustees. In line with the strategy,we will focus on the Energy and Transport sectors along with International Accreditation of engineering courses. The Internet of Things will also be a focus area for us. We plan to launch the IET Faraday Programme for school children between the ages of 5 and 19 years. We are currently scouting for sponsors for this project and if you think that you know any corporate or trust who might be interested in sponsoring the programme, please do let us know.

The E&T magazine will go digital for all members in India from 2015. This is keeping in line with our sustainability agenda. We are also working closely with the E&T editorial team to integrate region specific additional content for our digital edition which should soon be available for Indian readers.

The IET Delhi Local Network organised activities to mark Engineers’ Day 2014. Speakers from various engineering disciplines delivered lectures on the theme - Making Indian Engineering World Class.

Mr N Venkatesan, Former Member Electrical, Railway Board and Mr V K Gupta, Chairman of IET Delhi LN were the Chief Guests. Ashwani Lohani, Chief Administrative Officer of Indian Railway Organisation of Alternative Fuel and Mr Yogender Pal, Advisor, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting were the Guests of Honour.

Mr N Venkatesan discussed the achievements of Indian engineers and their societal relevance. He highlighted the role Railway Engineers could play in reducing rural –urban divide, thus creating world-class experiences. Adding to what Mr Venkatesan had established in his talk,

Mr Pardeep Chaturvedi, Council Member of the Institution of Engineers (India) summarised some of the best Indian technology innovations.

Mr Ashwani Lohani shared insights on how technology improvements have positively impacted Indian Railways. He shared his experience of transforming the looks of railway stations with the aid of technology.
Mr Yogender Pal highlighted the role of Indian engineers in the field of Radio wave broadcasting.

Developing world-class engineering infrastructure was the core theme of Mr V K Gupta’s talk. He discussed the technical, theoretical and practical aspects of infrastructure development and its policy implications. These lectures were followed by an interactive session..

Nearly 45 delegates representing Indian Railways, IEI, Institution of Electronics & Telecommunication attended the event.

Mr R N Rajpoot, Secretary of the IET Delhi LN, Mr Aman Rajpoot, Chairman – Young Professionals Section (IET Delhi LN), members and senior volunteers of the IET Delhi LN were also present.


Department of Civil Engineering at KCG College of Technology, Chennai inaugurated the IET Built Environment Chapter in September. The Chapter will serve as a platform for interested students to familiarise with industry best practices, stay up-to-date with developments in the sector, get guidance on publications and avail of networking opportunities.

Mr K S Asaithambi, Head - Offshore Structures, Technip India, inaugurated the chapter that was followed by a workshop on Building Information Modelling (BIM). Building Information Modelling is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places. Businesses and government agencies can effectively use BIM to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain diverse physical infrastructures (like water electricity, gas, communication utilities, roads, bridges and ports etc.).

Mr Asaithambi discussed industry best practices in BIM and Ms N Uma, Senior Engineer – Civil & structural division, Technip India summarised its applications in Oil & Gas Engineering projects.

Nearly 150 students from various engineering colleges attended the session.

Dr T Rengaraja, Principal and Prof J John Alexander, Head of Department, KCG College of Technology,
Prof S Cloudin, Treasurer, IET Chennai LN, senior members and volunteers of IET Chennai LN were present.

The IET Mumbai LN organised its TechDais lecture on ‘Sustainability in Water Supply’. The lecture discussed pertinent engineering issues related to availability of pure water. Mr Satish Chilekar, one of India’s pioneers in Membrane Technology led the session. Mr Chilekar has nearly 30 years of experience and is credited with initiating India’s first indigenous Reverse Osmosis (RO) system.

South-east coast of India has been facing severe challenges when it comes to potable water. There is need for additional desalination of plants and related infrastructure to cater to the ever-growing urban demands – especially in metropolitan cities like Chennai. Solutions to address this and challenges faced by engineers in Operations and Maintenance of RO membranes in Sea Water plants were also discussed.

Delegates from engineering organisations including Tata Project Ltd, Black & Veatch and Toyo Engineering attended the lecture.

Senior members and volunteers of the IET Mumbai LN were present.


The IET Kolkata LN has announced Michael Faraday IET International Summit (MFIIS-2015) for the year 2015. The international conference will be focused on Power, Control & Automation will be held in Kolkata on 12 and 13 September 2015.

The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, Amity School of Engineering and Technology, Lucknow organised a two - day National Conference on Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing in September 2014. The conference was hosted in association with the IET.

Over 600 delegates participated in the conference which brought enthusiasts from various streams of Electronics engineering under one roof to discuss the latest developments in signal processing. 72 research papers and 40 posters were presented in the conference.

Dr L K Maheshwari, Former Vice Chancellor of BITS - Pilani was the Chief Guest. IET Members - Mr M R Verma, President, Signalling and Safety, Indian Railways and
Dr S S Agarwal, Ex-Emeritus Scientist, discussed the latest developments in signal processing space. Speakers from reputed organisations including CSIR-CEERI, BITS- Pilani, NSIT, MathWorks and RML University contributed to the technical sessions.

Sudeshna Saha becomes first Indian to win the prestigious Present Around the World (PATW) competition in London.

When Sudeshna said "I am putting in all my efforts to bring the trophy home", after being declared the South Asia level winner, she meant every word of it. This young engineering student from Techno India College, Kolkata won the global finals of IET’s Present Around the World competition and she is the first Indian to win this honour. The results were announced on November 19, 2014 at the IET awards ceremony, held in London.

Sudeshna’s winning presentation focused on the scientific breakthroughs in batteries focusing on the Super-Powered Batteries and Jelly Batteries. It was an intense competition, contested by four finalists from Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe. Sudeshna attributes her win to rigorous preparation. She sought inputs from journals on her topic, did multiple rounds of mock presentations with friends and family and worked on making her presentation simple, yet engaging.

She was awarded with a cash prize of £1,000 (approx. Rs. 100,000/-), a trophy and certificate.

Ashish Kumar, IET Chennai LN volunteer was awarded the IET Paul Fletcher Award for outstanding contributions to the activities of the IET.

Ashish is a Supply Chain Management professional at Accenture, Chennai. He is an active member of the IET and currently serves as the Joint Secretary of Chennai Young Professionals Section (YPS) He has played an instrumental role in organising over 30 National and International events under the IET Chennai LN banner.

Ashish was presented a certificate, medal and £250 cash prize at the IET Awards ceremony held in London on November 19, 2014.

Dr L V Muralikrishna Reddy, FIE, IntPE, CEng has been appointed President – Elect of The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) for the year
2014 -15.

Dr Reddy is well-known for his contributions to Indian engineering like developing collaborative research ecosystems and critical technologies indigenously, transforming IEI’s academic programme and strengthening IEI’s position as India’s leading body of professional engineers.

The IET congratulates Dr Reddy and wishes him every success in his endeavours. We look forward to a strong collaboration between the IET and the IEI.

Driver of BLOODHOUND SSC & World Land Speed Record Holder

Wing Commander Andy Green, is a serving Royal Air Force Fighter Pilot.

Driving Richard Noble’s Thrust SSC (Supersonic Car) in 1997, Andy and the team set the world’s first and only supersonic Land Speed Record at an astonishing 763 mph, driving literally ‘faster than a speeding bullet’. Andy is now involved in perhaps the ultimate Land Speed Record challenge. He is the driver for the new Bloodhound SSC, designed to reach an astonishing 1,000 mph. Using his previous Record-breaking experience, and drawing on his first-class Mathematics degree from Oxford and his experience as a Fighter Pilot, Andy is also a member of the design team for this remarkable
jet- and rocket-powered Car.

It is not just the breaking of the Land Speed Record that Andy is passionate about. Through the BLOODHOUNDSSC project, he wants to fire the imagination of school students to experience the magic of science and technology.

Andy Green was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1997.

Azra Fathima: You drove the Thrust SSC and set the last world land speed record at 763 mph 17 years back. Why has the record remained unbroken for so long?

Andy Green: Quite simply, because building a Supersonic Car is so difficult. Others have tried, and are still trying, to match the achievement, but no-one has yet.

AF: What would you pick as the most significant areas of technology evolution between then and now?

AG: Computer modeling. In 1997, computational fluid dynamics was limited by the computers of the time, and was a new and untested technology. Today, it is widely used and well developed – we can now model BLOODHOUND’s performance in a way we could not have dreamed of 20 years ago.

AF: What has remained unchanged, if at all?

AG: The size of the challenge. Huge power requirements massive aerodynamic loads, precise control data, the world’s flattest race
track – the World Land Speed Record needs all that and more.

AF: What have been the most critical learnings from 1997?

AG: Focus on all areas of the problem. It’s not just

about speed and power, it’s also control, innovation, precision, safety – this is about having a superb engineering team, not just a fast car.

AF: What makes BLOODHOUND the most remarkable racing car in history?

AG: Two things. Performance is the obvious one, with the target speed of 1,600 kmph being faster than any jet fighter at ground level. Inspiration is the other – the Car will be streaming live video and data every time we run, to the largest engineering audience in history, to engage the next generation of young scientists and engineers in an astonishing 'Engineering Adventure'.

AF: What are the key engineering and technology challenges that will be tested in 2015, before attempting Mach 1.3+ in 2016?

AG: Too many to list. Aerodynamics, structure, wheels, jet intake, rocket performance, the desert surface, airbrakes, parachutes – it’s a long list.

AF: Are you relying on hi-fidelity simulation to get a sense of the unknown?

AG: We’re using precision modeling to get us as close as we can be. We’re then testing the Car step-by-step to validate all of the results.


AF: At "jet-set-go", what are all the things that you will be doing inside the cockpit?

AG: Getting all the systems ready to go, pre-warming the rocket, release the brakes, wind the jet up at a precise rate, feed in the rocket at a pre-determined point, control and monitor the Car’s steering, throttle the engines as required, bring them back to idle/off in sequence at the end of the timing trap, deploy the air brakes and./or parachutes, monitor the speed and distance, wait for slow speed to use the wheels brakes, stop the Car – that’s a short summary, there’s a lot going on in the cockpit.

AF: With all the noise in the cockpit, the G forces and of course, the magnitude of the feat itself, what does it take not to get overwhelmed?

AG: Training and confidence. I’m a Royal Air Force fighter pilot, so I’ve been trained by the best to cope with this sort of challenge.

AF: What is the actual distance that you will cover as part of the new world record in 2016 and why?

AG: 20 km, from a standing start, and the Car will

come to rest just 2 minutes after setting off. That’s the distance it takes to accelerate to 1600kph and then slow down again.

AF: So, at the end of the busiest and fastest two minutes of your life, what will be the impact on your physical and mental being?

AG: I’ll find out over the next 2 years.

AF: What’s the fitness regimen like for the mind and body for this astounding feat?

AG: Fly jet fighters for a living, some practice in racing cars, ‘G’ training in an aerobatic aircraft, and keep fit. Plus know every detail about every system on the Car, and exactly how every single bit is meant to look, sound and operate.

AF: What is your message to Indian students where STEM and engineering is the first choice?

AG: Technology will shape the future, your future – go out there and grab it now!


AF: How have global technology giants contributed and specifically, what is India’s contribution to Project BLOODHOUND?

AG: India has made some key contributions to BLOODHOUND. The very high-quality steel for the rear chassis is made by Tata Steel, while Jaguar (another Tata company) is helping to build the cockpit and steering wheel, supplying the V8 engine that will power the rocket pump, and all our support vehicles.

AF: How would you describe your trip to India this year to deliver the IET Lord Austin lectures in Bangalore and Chennai?

AG: The IET Lord Austin Lectures were an amazing experience. It was a privilege to be able to present BLOODHOUND and our ‘Engineering Adventure’ to such a wide audience. Everyone was excited about this amazing race car, with key support from India, that will be doing 1,600 kph in the near future.

AF: Have you wondered what life will be like after BLOODHOUND?

AG: No, I’m far too busy right now.

AF: Is there a book or feature film on the cards to tell the story?

AG: There will be a series of books, the first deals are being discussed right now. Films are also being planned.

AF: What is your message to speed enthusiasts who indulge in dangerous speeding activities and drag racing just for thrills?

AG: Simple – don’t do it.

AF: You are an inspiration to thousands around the world, a larger than life hero. Who is your hero in the real world and why?

AG: I was lucky enough to meet Neil Armstrong a couple of times. Despite his unique position as ‘the first man on the moon’, he saw himself as a scientist first and a pilot second. He fully supported BLOODHOUND’s experimental approach to extreme engineering and gave us a lot of examples from his test pilot and astronaut career that we could learn from.

AF: And finally, what will be your personal take-away and learnings from this superhuman endeavour?

AG: Modern technology makes the world a remarkable and exciting place. With the right team, the right engineers, the right ideas, you can do almost anything.


IET Lord Austin Lecture 2014 - ‘Project BLOODHOUND - An Engineering Adventure’ was delivered by Wing Commander Andy Green, Fighter Pilot in the Royal Air Force & Driver of BLOODHOUND SSC. The lectures were delivered in Bangalore and Chennai on November 13 and 14 respectively.

The Bangalore edition of the lecture was held at the state-of-the-art Convention Centre of Infosys, one of India’s leading consulting, technology and outsourcing solutions companies. Project BLOODHOUND is all about inspiring young students to take up Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). In keeping with this vision, the IET also invited school students to give them an up and close view of the future of engineering. . Nearly 500 school students from schools including Delhi Public School, Sudarshan Vidya Mandir,

Acts of Hope, Presidency School and Jain Residential School attended the event. The young students asked intelligent and insightful questions and engaged Andy in a lively Q&A session. Members from the industry across auto, manufacturing, aviation, IT and other sectors added to the capacity crowd. Students of PES University of Bangalore provided solid support as volunteers for the event.

SRM University, Chennai hosted the Chennai edition of the lecture. With an audience of 2,200, the event set a record for IET India for the highest number of attendees for any event. Dr Parivendhar, (Founder Chancellor, SRM University), Dr C Muthamizhchelvan (Director, Engineering and Technology, SRM University), and Mr T V Ramachandran HonFIET (Resident Director – Regulatory Affairs, Vodafone India) were among the attendees.



IET Pinkerton Lecture 2014

Talk focuses on opportunities for India with 1.9 bn devices expected to be connected in the country by 2023

The IET hosted its annual IET Pinkerton lecture at GE John F Welch Technology Centre, Bangalore on December 4th. The lecture topic was on the evolving phenomenon of Internet of Things and was delivered by Jim Morrish, Founder and Chief Research Officer, Machina Research, UK. Jim spoke on "Internet of Things – The Connected Future."

This was the last international Prestige Lecture for the calendar year 2014 and the first that catered only to working professionals, as a sector event. More than 150 delegates representing nearly 25 organisations attended the lecture.

Internet of Things presented a perfect topic for the IET Pinkerton Lecture of 2014 not only because it is an emerging phenomenon with tremendous potential, but also because it is a multi-disciplinary technology, further strengthening the IET’s focus as a multidisciplinary organisation.

During the lecture, Jim Morrish provided a comprehensive overview of the emerging trends in IoT – tracing its evolution from M2M to Subnets of Things and finally emerging as Internet of Things (IoT). He discussed the driving forces behind the anticipated 38 billion connected devices worldwide by 2023, 1.9 billion of which will be in India and 600mn of which will be M2M connections in India. While talking about the tremendous benefits and opportunities, Jim also laid bare the risks and challenges of IoT and the importance of ensuring that they were addressed. The speaker also spoke of the opportunities for India in the areas of Smart Cities, Electric Vehicles (EVs), Irrigation, Telemedicine, Power Distribution and Smart Metering, Assisted Living etc., where IoT could play a significant role in connectivity, efficiency and cost savings.

The IET focuses on different streams of engineering and organises lectures by prominent personalities from across the world to showcase the future of science and technology to young engineering professionals. Hosting the IET Pinkerton Lecture is an endeavour that springs from the IET’s mission to inspire, inform and influence.

The IET Pinkerton lecture is hosted in honour of John Pinkerton, the pioneering computer engineer who was involved in designing the UK’s first business computer in 1951.
